About the Author

Diane E. Papalia is a distinguished professor who has taught thousands of undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Vassar College both a master's degree in child development and family relations and a Ph.D. in life-span developmental psychology from West Virginia University. Her research has been published in prestigious journals such as Human Development, International Journal of Aging and Human Development, Sex Roles, Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, and Journal of Gerontology. Her primary research focus has been cognitive development from childhood through old age.

Gabriela Alicia Martorell is a Full Professor of Psychology at Virginia Wesleyan University. She has a diverse background, having been born in Seattle, Washington, and later moved to Guatemala as a toddler. At age eight, she returned to the United States and lived in Northern California before pursuing her undergraduate training at the University of California, Davis. She holds a B.S. in Psychology and earned her Ph.D. in Developmental and Evolutionary Psychology with an interdisciplinary emphasis in Human Development from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Gabriela is dedicated to teaching and mentoring and has researched the retention of higher education students from traditionally underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and math. She is also involved in volunteer work and serves as a group fitness instructor for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads.
